Introduction to Somatic Therapy:

Foundational Tools for Practice

  •

CE CONTACT HOURS: 4 approved by NY State Board of Psychology, Social Work, and Mental Health Counselors

Workshop Description:

The body’s intelligence historically has been an untapped resource in the therapy room.  The “somatic narrative” - gesture, posture, prosody, facial expressions, eye gaze and movement - could be considered of greater importance than words spoken.  The “soma” is foundational for self awareness and change.  In this introductory workshop learn building blocks for incorporating somatic techniques into your therapeutic practice to help clients resolve trauma and improve overall well-being.

Specific skills that will be taught include:

· Understanding the principles of Somatic Therapy and Foundational Principles

· Recognizing the wisdom of the body

· Techniques for grounding, centering, attunement and safety

· Somatic approaches to identifying and addressing trauma

· Strategies for helping clients release tension and stress

· Incorporating mindfulness and body awareness practices into therapy sessions

· Integrating Somatic Therapy into your existing practice

Learning Objectives:

Participants will be able to:

  • Describe the basic principles of Somatic Therapy

  • Recognize the connection between the body/mind in addressing trauma

  •  Utilize alignment, grounding, centering, and breathing techniques to help clients manage stress

  • · Identify somatic signs of trauma and apply appropriate interventions

  • · Incorporate mindfulness and body awareness practices into therapy sessions

  • · Integrate Somatic Therapy techniques into your existing practice

*NOTE: This workshop is a prerequisite for taking Somatic Therapy - Advanced Techniques I, II

This is a highly participatory workshop with a significant amount of time devoted to experience practicing the techniques introduced.
